10 Uplifting Prayers To Help Overcome Grief

I apologize for publishing this article over a weekend because I understand how busy everyone is during the week and takes the weekend to relax and spend time with your loved ones.

My amazing grandmother passed away this past Thursday after living a very long and beautiful life, and is now dancing in heaven with my grandfather! But even though I recognize that every life will come to an end, I am still dealing with the loss of my beloved grandmother, and would very much appreciate anyone reading this to please share any prayers with me that have given you comfort during times of grieving for the loss of a loved one, especially a grandparent.

Below I have listed 10 prayers that have helped me deal with grief in the past, but with that said I need some new ones to help me get through this loss.

#10 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: Isaiah 53:4-5, Joshua 1:9

Heavenly Father, I thank You that You sent Your Son to be pierced and crushed so that by His wounds I could be healed. I pray that You help me walk in this promise of healing during this difficult time. I pray for healing from the sadness I feel and pray that I can one day be strong as You instructed Joshua. Help me not to be discouraged, because You are always with me, Amen.

#9 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: Loss Of A Loved One

Loving Father, I am finding it so hard to even get up out of bed to start the day, knowing that I have to face it alone and without the one I love so dearly. I know that without Your grace and sufficiency I could never get through the day, but I thank You that You have promised to be with me and to provide me with Your strength for today as well as bright hope for tomorrow.

I can’t imagine tomorrow being anything but a day filled with pain, as I do not have my loved one beside me, but I ask that in Your grace You will give me the strength to get through today, step by step, knowing that You are there to carry me, even when my heart seems to fail from the grief and pain that I am going through.

Thank You. that You have promised to carry our pain and thank You that Your grace is sufficient for every eventuality in our lives. Give me the strength to cope with the loneliness I feel and help me to move forward in my life-plans, knowing that You are with me, to support and strengthen.

Give me hope for tomorrow, for my hope and my trust is in You, Lord. Hold me close I pray, and thank You for always being with me and the great comfort that I have in knowing You, as my own dear Savior and friend, Amen.

#8 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: Loss And Deep Grief

O God, I come to You filled with hurt and sadness and even anger because of my great loss. Lord, I know that You have a plan for each of our lives, but I am in such pain and grief that it is hard to focus on the truth that You do care and that You have had to face deep grief and loss too. Lord, my hurt and pain runs deep and I feel that my heart is breaking. I ask you to touch my hurting heart.

I know, Lord, that You are the God of comfort and that You have been with me every step of the way. I ask You to draw ever closer to me at this time for I feel that my whole world has been shattered.

I find it hard when people who don’t understand try to say words that they think are comforting but sometimes it makes the hurt even worse and I feel hurt and so very, very alone.

Lord, I know it is true that in time the pain will lessen but please be with me, hold me close and steady me, for I know that without You I could not face another day, another hour.

I keep thinking about that song we used to sing when I was younger, never a heartache, and never a groan, never a teardrop, and never a moan, ever a danger but there on the throne, moment by moment He thinks of His own.

I keep thinking about that song we used to sing when I was younger, never a heartache, and never a groan, never a teardrop, and never a moan, ever a danger but there on the throne, moment by moment He thinks of His own, Amen.

#7 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: Psalms 73:26, John 14:1

Oh Lord, my flesh feels crippled by my grief, but Your Word says that in spite of this and even though my flesh and heart fail, it is You who is the strength of my heart forever. Lord, I put my trust in You and ask that You allow me to let go of my grief so that I can receive Your peace. I thank You in advance for the peace that I am about to receive, Amen.

#6 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: 1 Peter 5:7

Dear Lord, the grief I feel right now is unbearable. I understand that You know how I feel because You created me and I know that You care for me. I cast all of my sadness on You so that I can feel whole again. Please take away the pain so that I can be filled with peace. Make my heart whole so that I can feel joy again. Lord I love You and thank You for being with me during this difficult period of my life, Amen.

#5 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: 2 Corinthians 1:4

Dear Lord, I thank You for the comfort I have received. I didn’t think that I would make it, but because of You I have replaced grief with peace. Your Word says that we may be able to comfort those who are in trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. So, Father help me to comfort others in the way that You have comforted me. Let my healing be another person’s comfort and strength. Father, thank You for keeping me and strengthening my heart. This is the prayer of my heart, Amen.

#4 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: Prayer For Comfort When You’re Hurting

Dear God, Some days feel too hard. We’re hurting. Struggling. Fighting fear and worry at every turn. Thank you in the midst of it all, you haven’t left us to fend for ourselves. Forgive us for doubting you are there. Forgive us for thinking you’ve forgotten. Forgive us for believing we somehow know the better way.

You are fully trustworthy. You are All-Powerful. You are Able. You are Lord over every situation no matter how difficult it may seem. You are Healer and will never waste the grief we carry today. You will use all things for good in some way. Anything is possible with you. Nothing is too difficult for you.

We pray for those who grieve today. We ask for your comfort to surround those who weep. We pray for the peace of your presence to cover our minds and thoughts, as you remind us, the enemy can never steal us out of your hands. He never has the final say over our lives. We are kept safe in your presence forever, whether in life or in death.

We thank you that your ways are higher than our ways and your thoughts are bigger than our thoughts.

We lay it all down at your feet, every burden, every care. Believing that is the safest place for it to be.

We love you, Lord, we need your fresh grace.

In the Powerful Name of Jesus, Amen.

#3 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: A Prayer for Those in Grief

Lord, you know those who are hurting right now. We know you care because you are our Heavenly Father. God, I thank you for giving us comfort when we hurt. Help us remember we are not alone as we grieve. Help us cling to You when we feel despair and we miss those we have lost. Father, show us how to take refuge in You when our hearts are shattered. We know you understand. So we lift up each person reading this right now. Comfort them. We pray this in Your Son’s precious and Holy name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

#2 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: A Prayer for When You Need God’s Comfort and Encouragement

Father of mercies, comfort and strengthen my heart today. You know my affliction. Thank you for the peace that comes from knowing you are intimately acquainted with my deepest struggles and doubts. Thank you for your healing presence.

You are the God of all comfort. Help me keep my heart open to your Holy Spirit today. Bring your peace and love into my life. Remind me of the joy of my salvation and give me the strength to keep trusting you. Even in my difficult circumstances, you are in control, and you are working for my good. Comfort me today.

Lord, thank you for the comfort I find in the knowledge that you know all my troubles. Make me aware of the affliction and trouble of those around me, that I might serve to bring encouragement to them today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

#1 Best Uplifting Prayer To Help Overcome Grief: Psalm 34:18

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit, Amen.

I hope everyone has an AMAZING rest of your weekend, and I appreciate any, and ALL, prayers that you can share with me to help me and my family get through this sad time in our lives.

  2. Your words are beautiful just like your precious, it’s okay to grieve over the loss of your grandmother, scripture says that time is time to weep and time to heal, Christ Himself said blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. You are beautiful daughter of the God Most High, and I bet your grandmother is happy, you love the Lord and your life has real purpose, Keep letting your bright light shine for God’s love and your love for sharing prayers with others. never apologize for sharing prayer requests or God’s word. God loves you and so do I. I am praying for you, and give you big hug from your brother in Christ. God is good, Amen! Revelation 14: 13

  5. Prayers for comfort for you and your family for sure, but it sounds like your grandparents were believers so that is the ultimate hope. Perhaps the best thing I can do is quote one of my favorite verses: He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth. Maybe in the midst of the pain of loss that will bring a smile to your face. It’s all about the resurrection!

  6. So sorry to see you having to experience the loss of your grandmother. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Psalm 116:15
Please know that her life is not gone, she lives.
    John 11:25-26
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

    1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
    1 Corinthians 15:51-55
    2 Corinthians 5:1-8

We believe in hope, have confidence in everlasting life, and expectation of resurrection.

Father thank you for the the promise of eternity with you.

  8. I wouldn’t say uplifting, but I went through a time that I ask myself, why are all my love ones dying and not me. I’ve had many life challenges and I am bless to still be alive. When I think of those who has gone before me, I see how they shape my life. I find through death grief is normal, but not the answer all the time. At people ‘s funeral we rejoice a life that was lived. Remember the life your grandma lived and not that she is gone. You’ll see in time that there will be quality in you that is like your grandma. I always hope that I don’t stop grieving for my love ones because I don’t ever want to forget. God has a way to make the unknown understandable, so trust in God.

  9. Beautiful post! Beautiful prayers. Grief is something we all encounter throughout our lives. Knowing our loved ones are in Heaven is a comfort but we still miss them nonetheless. I found great comfort in reading C.S.Lewis’ “A Grief Observed”. He also has another book titled, “the Problem of Pain” but it is much harder to read. Trust the process of grief, don’t fight it and there is no wrong way to grieve through the stages of grief. Grief is not your enemy, though it may feel it at times. Counseling helps formal or informal with someone you trust. I lost my mom in 2012, my grief is still with me and I miss her every day and as time continues I find that the lessons I learned from her are still teaching me today. My thoughts and prayers are with you. If I can help in any way please reach out. 🙏🏻💚🌻

  11. Excellent post, sister! Diligent work done to provide and equip the Body of Messiah with the proper weapons to fight against the entrapments of the Adversary. Grieving the loss of a loved one is important and necessary. Even Messiah Yeshua Himself did it, albeit resurrecting the dead man (Lazarus) afterward. The main point here is that ADONAI doesn’t want us to get caught up in the misery of grief but to remind us to find the ULTIMATE JOY in Him and what He has done for us, to the Jew first and then to the Gentile. We have the JOY of having an intimate relationship with The Resurrection and The Life, for ADONAI ELOHIM is the God of the LIVING and of the dead. (Rom. 14:8-9) and His Community will never taste the sting of the Second Death but will have Life Eternal through our TRUSTING in the slain Lamb of ADONAI, which is accredited to us as RIGHTEOUSNESS. Praise ADONAI ELOHIM, His Anointed Son and His Rüakh HaKodesh! Praise ADONAI for all eternity for HE ALONE is worthy of our praise! 🙌🏻🤍🕊️🔥🙏🏻

  12. The 23rd Psalm is always one of my favorites. But what helps in the face of the deep loss of the comforting love of a beloved Grandmother is John 11 and Jesus being deeply moved at the death of his friend Lazarus to the point of weeping. Jesus cries with you. He knows the pain you are feeling. He didn’t try to be brave, he wept. You have suffered a loss and it hurts. I am so sorry for that loss. I pray God’s comfort to embrace you and bring you peace.

  13. I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother. Even after a long and full life, we can’t help but be sorry for the time that we will miss seeing loved ones…though as Christians, we know it is only for a time. A verse you had shared recently….the context was Paul struggling with things he had to deal with and God did not take them away, but did say that He would give strength to deal with them.  “My grace is sufficient. Because my strength is made perfect in your weakness…” 2 Corinthians 12:9 That is easier to read than to feel, sometimes. But here is a song that helped me to into context the joy that I could find for my recent loss of my sister….she was so much better, and I could take comfort in that celebration. 14. Deepest condolences for the loss of your beautiful grandmother. My Uncle who is a Pastor shared this with me during a time of intense sorrow, “Cry often, our tears provide spiritual healing.” God collects our tears. He has promised to wipe them away and heal our broken hearts. Praying for you.

  15. I’m truly sorry to hear about the loss of your grandmother. Grieving a loss like this can take months or even years. So, don’t let anyone pressure you into just “snapping out of it.” It doesn’t work that may. May our Lord Jesus Christ give you strength for the journey while you bear this burden. Amen..

  18. I have nothing except for two words: Jesus wept.

It is the greatest comfort to know he was where we are all at sometimes. I lost two people last year and nearly lost another. Words sometimes fall short, but Jesus’ own sorrow doesn’t. He weeps with those who weep.

Sympathies to you and your family. May the God of all comfort wrap you up in his arms.

  19. Rebecca Warren writes beautifully. One phrase that stood out as I sat reading one of her articles made me think about the grief we feel when someone we love has died … “In the exhausted depression that too much grief can bring”. It seems grief does that. It’s exhausting and depressing.
Not even the most experienced of musicians can adequately capture in a manuscript the musical score of what plays inside our hearts when someone we love dies. The crescendo of an old and well-lived life seems to falter until all voices are silenced, and we are left feeling hollow and empty.
I love it that at those times God is our Maestro. He has created the original musical manuscript for all our lives. He is the Master Musician. We all need His help when He comes to compose the finale of our time here on earth, let alone deal with the grief we feel over someone we have loved.
Psalm 139:13 says that “all the days ordained for me were written in God’s book before one of them came to be.”
So without getting too fancy and re-reading the above, I have gone overboard with fancy, I want to encourage you to say goodbye and remember your grandmother always.
Acts 20:24 (NLT) says, “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus…” Proverbs 20:29 says, “The glory of the young is their strength; the gray hair of experience is the splendour of the old.”
As you think of your grandmother may you one day be able to say with the words of Psalm 30:11 …“You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give You thanks forever”

May you know the strength and peace of God as you find a way through the maze of mourning and grief towards a time of joy as you remember special moments you have shared with your grandmother.

  21. I’m sorry for your loss – it’s never easy to say “see you later” to someone we love. Not sure if it helps, but John 16:33 comes to mind: “In this life you will face trials, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

Keep up the good, uplifting work!

  23. Thank you so much for writing that. My husband’s death still hurts so bad even I blamed God he never left me. When I wouldn’t listen to him. He sent people into my life to help me along the way. Today I thank him.
