Why Was Jesus’ Baptism Important?

Jesus didn’t need to repent or turn from sin, rather, his baptism served as a sign to John, and future generations of believers, that he was the Messiah. With this confirmation in place, John’s mission to prepare the way for the Messiah was complete.

Jesus’ baptism account is a beautiful portrayal of the loving union of the Trinity – Father, Son and Spirit. This moment in his life marked the beginning of his ministry in which he was partaking in the human experience fully as the spotless lamb of God sent to save the world.

The baptism of Jesus doesn’t have to be confusing, even if it does raise some questions. Jesus wasn’t baptized for the same reasons that us believers need to be baptized. Instead, his baptism confirms his identity as the Messiah, and demonstrates his willingness to take on humanity to be the perfect atonement for all sin and death. Jesus modeled a key step, baptism, in the life of every believer. At the end of his life, Jesus instructed his disciples to make disciples in all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (See: Matthew 28:19). From the start to the end of his ministry, Jesus championed the significance of baptism for those who put their faith in God.

  1. Great stuff and a good reminder for us all. And for us, Obedience to Christ, Publicly professing our faith, and Committing to Christ’s people (they were added to the church) helps us to communicate to new believers!

  2. I find flowing water a symbol of purification, cleansing, and fresh starts. When we finish one chore, we tidy up for a clean start on the second one. I find similar symbolism in baptism—closure, washing away the past, to start fresh. We often have to let go of the past, good or bad, to enter a new phase of our lives.

In my heart, the most powerful message is that of friendship and forgiveness, in addition to fulfilling scripture.

You write beautifully. Cheers, thank you for the inspiration and have a great day.

I’m not a believer in luck, in the sense of random events for good or ill; but it does look like a nice site you’ve set up.

  3. When John tried to forbid Jesus from being baptized because John himself needed to be baptized by Jesus, Jesus replied, “It is our duty to fulfill all righteousness”. Here again we see that righteousness is obeying the commands of God. A free gift? Hardly. Jesus came to do and fulfill the entire law of Moses. Jesus did not need to repent, or to be baptized with the baptism of repentance. This is a fact. Yet he did need to follow the law of the sacrificial animal being washed with water before it was killed and burned. John understood this perfectly as he from then on he told the people when Jesus was nearby, “Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” John was the greatest prophet born of women. Why? He prepared the way of the Lord, but also something even more important than this. John had the high honor and privilege to wash the sacrificial lamb of God in water preparing him for his death on the cross. The law required this of every animal that was to be sacrificed. It had to be done before John was thrown into prison, and before his murder from King Herod. Thus we see at the baptism of Jesus Christ the Holy Spirit coming upon him, and the voice of Father God thundering from heaven. There was great pleasure and joy among the God of three persons. The sacrificial lamb was now washed and prepared for him being the sin offering for the entire world.
