If you’ve ever had a religious conversation with an atheist, then this question probably came up.
“If there is a God, then why is He giving people cancer?”
Atheists are constantly trying to prove that God doesn’t exist.
But let’s go along with their argument for a while.
What if people didn’t ever become sick?
It sounds nice at first.
But take a moment to picture a world where everyone was healthy…no matter how much they abused their body.
Our actions would be robbed of their meaning.
It wouldn’t matter what we did.
Drinking.
Smoking.
Drugs.
Everything would be the same as living a healthy lifestyle.
And we would quickly not even have a reason to live purely.
Disease, however, is what gives our health meaning.
It allows us to appreciate what we have instead of taking it for granted.
It is the greatest motivator to exercise regularly, sleep 7 to 8 hours every night, and take care of our physical and spiritual health.
And it is how God tests our trust in Him.
When we face challenges, it can often be tempting to become discouraged or even question God’s plan.
However, if we approach these challenges with a positive attitude, they can become opportunities for us to grow in our faith and deepen our relationship with God.
One of the key biblical principles is perseverance.
In James 1:2-4, we are told to consider it pure joy when we face trials, because they test our faith and produce perseverance.
By relying on God’s strength and seeking His guidance during times of struggle, we can build resilience and deepen our trust in Him.
Through our hardships, we learn to be thankful for the blessings in our journeys.
Our loved ones, our health, our possessions, this is how everything gains meaning.
God sends challenges our way because He loves us and wants us to evolve.
So if you are ever faced with health issues, don’t be discouraged.
Be thankful for them.
They are not obstacles.
They are God’s way to allow us to appreciate His blessings to us.
Good perspective!

Maybe my answer to the atheist question would be with a question I would ask them. Why is it when something very extreme happens the first couple words people say is “Oh God! “

Thanks! Very thoughtful writing. Yes, having sicknesses gives us the opportunity to grow in our faith.

George Bush, Sr, was asked, “If there is a god, why is there so much suffering in the world?” He looked puzzled for a minute and replied, “I never thought to blame Him for all that.”😉

Also, we live in a fallen imperfect world because of what happened with Adam and Eve.

God, being imaginary, gives people nothing. Ignorant humans once thought that this god gave people disease when they did something wrong. Happily, we found that to be untrue and us humans have cured and treated many diseases. So if this god is trying to punish people, us puny humans have greatly stopped it.
So, no, not being sick robs nothing of meaning. If that was the case, then the christian heaven would make everything worthless. There is no such thing as “living purely”, a term that christians certainly can’t agree about.
Do explain why an omniscient god needs to test anyone at all, already knowing everything.
Per your argument, it seems that this god uses harm to force people to it. That isn’t love, that’s abuse.

why would I think your imaginary god would bless me when it doesn’t even do that for christians?
I’m always bemused when a christian says this, and blithely ignores how this god fails starving kids, people dying in massacres, etc. It really does show how selfish and narcissistic you are.

Great post, and it’s a question that will always be asked in every generation. But even illness can be used for the glory of God, especially is the dis-eased individual praises God in the midst of their trial.👍🏻👍🏻

God doesn’t give us diseases – a fallen world does, a fallen humanity does, a weakened genome by sinfulness does, a destroyed society does, a corrupted worldly system does. God allows such things. Yet, what does these things teach us? Compassion! Would we be compassionate towards people if these things didn’t exist? Would build one another up? Would we recognize the hurts of people, the horrors of what such a fallen world has done? Doubtful. The answer to, ‘why does God allow evil’ is of the same vein. He has a solution for it, He has a solution to end it and He has given us hope to endure it.

These obstacles come in many forms not just health issues, I believe many challenges are put in our way to teach us and show us our righteous path home.
